Ọ̀ṣun: mère de la féminité

Osun is the Yoruba orisha associated with love, sensuality, fertility, femininity, divination, purity, beauty, water and wealth. She is considered the most popular and is one of the most revered of the 401 orishas. Yes, that's a lot!

She is not only revered for her association with femininity but also for her importance, for according to the Ifa Literary Corpus, Osun was the only female Irunmole (primordial spirit) sent to help Shango create the world by Olodumare, the Supreme God. The other spirits sent ignored Oshun, who decided to leave with his sacred waters (rivers and all types of non-salted water, fresh water called in Yoruba omi dundun), condemning the world to drought and the instinct of all that resides there. Realizing their mistake, the others decided to seek advice from Oludunmaré who forced them to apologize to her. This illustrates its essential role in maintaining harmony, fertility and balance of life, showing that its absence creates suffering for humanity. And therefore illustrates the importance of harmony between the two genders.

She is frequently depicted with a bronze mirror in one hand and a peacock feather fan in the other (the Abẹ̀bẹ̀). Often adorned with gold, cowry and pearl jewelry and other elaborate decorations. Wearing cowrie shells and coral beads in her elaborate hair. Its beauty is said to be incomparable and hypnotizing.

She is revered not only in Nigeria, but also in Benin, Latin America, Cuba and Haiti. Traditions and culture having crossed the ocean with the slave trade, its influence remains very important at the other end of the continent.

We can find goddesses in other mythologies who also have the same role, such as Aphrodite from Greek mythology, Venus from Roman mythology, Brigid from Celtic mythology and Kali from Hinduism. However, Osun should not be confused with Yemoja who is the goddess of the ocean, pregnant women, mothers and children and protector of them, also known as Mami Wata.

Known for loving honey, oranges, sunflowers, bronze and gold jewelry as well as anything directly or indirectly related to beauty (jewelry, perfume, makeup, etc.), Osùn. is the favorite idol of women.

Osun is the divine patroness of the Osun River in Nigeria, which is named after her. The river originates in Ekiti State, western Nigeria, and flows through the town of Osogbo, where the sacred grove of Osun-Osogbo, the main shrine of the deity, is located. Oṣun is honored during the Osun-Osogbo Festival, an annual two-week festival usually held in August, at the sacred Oṣun-Osogbo grove on the banks of the river.
